The community was a socialized community where members shared work, property, and a system of marriage called Complex Marriage. The Oneida Community Mansion House was built between 1861 and 1878 to house the community's 300 members. The community began producing silver-plated flatware in 1899.In 1880, the community transferred much of its property to a joint-stock company called Oneida Community Ltd. The community ended due to internal unhappiness and external animosity towards its sexual practices.
